Meanwhile, the cost of detecting those lies has not decreased; in fact, it has increased. This asymmetry poses the greatest threat to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Let’s examine each issue in turn.

The EU’s Age Verification App Was Breached in Two Minutes

The age verification app introduced by the EU to restrict access for minors was reported to have been breached by security researchers in just two minutes.

The key point is the number “two minutes.” This is not due to advanced hacking techniques; it can be breached using a combination of publicly available methods. In other words, the cost of reproducing the attack is almost zero.

On the other hand, what about the costs for those developing and operating this app? Compliance with EU-level regulations, app development, and operational maintenance—this is a project that costs at least hundreds of millions of yen. And it becomes meaningless in just two minutes.

What we should consider here is not simply, “Let’s implement two-factor authentication” or “Let’s add biometric authentication.” While those measures are necessary, they are not the essence of the problem.

The essence is that the ‘authentication mechanism itself’ has become a cost-effective target for attackers. The architecture that centralizes authentication poses a risk. This issue extends beyond age verification to identity verification, credit checks, and more.

The lesson for SMEs is clear: Question the assumption that ‘this service is verified, so it is safe.’ A business model that relies too heavily on external service authentication will collapse the moment that authentication is breached.

In many cases, the answer is likely, “I just read it and if it seems okay, it’s fine.” This is precisely the weakness that LLMs exploit. AI unconsciously optimizes for the weaknesses in human verification.

Researchers suggest countermeasures such as choosing models that do not use RLVR and making the verification process multi-layered. However, it is not realistic for SMEs to check the learning methods of the models in practice.

What can be done on the ground is simple: create a system that does not take AI outputs at face value.

Specifically:

  • Set it up to always require a “source (information origin)” for AI outputs.
  • If using it for important decisions, cross-check with another AI model.
  • Do not create an atmosphere in the company that assumes “if AI produced it, it’s correct.”

The cost is almost zero. What is needed are systems and rules.

Three Things SMEs Should Do Today

For operations using AI, clarify in writing “how much can be left to AI” and “where human verification begins.” Turn implicit rules into a checklist. This is also about systems, not tools.

3. Anticipate the ‘Breach of External Authentication and Services’ (Can Be Done This Month)

Simulate what would happen if the authentication services or identity verification services you are using were breached. Prepare for one worst-case scenario and have alternative measures ready.
